- W2065928990 abstract "In this article I discuss short performances and the expectations and assumptions of (monetary) value in the economy of performance. I take as my starting point Brian Lobel's project Carpe Minuta Prima in which Lobel buys a minute of participants' time. These minutes are then sold on, again for a pound. By asking how to make our time more valuable, the not-for-profit process of Carpe Minuta Prima examines the notion of ‘nowness’ in performance and questions the value of time in our economy of rushing around. Furthermore, by making an art work into an explicit monetary exchange, it questions the assumption that equals performance with disappearance or wasting time. I consider how the ‘nowness’ of performance does not necessarily avoid capture within market economy but is, in fact, part of a process which is ‘merely a relocation of operations from a market in goods to a market in services’ (Ridout, 2008 Ridout, Nicholas. 2008. “Performing in the service economy: Outsourcing and delegation”. In Double Agent, Edited by: Bishop, Claire and Tramontana, Silvia. 126–31. London: ICA. [Google Scholar]: 130). Examining the material conditions in which performance gets produced, programmed and circulated, I examine the assumptions often present in the programming and pricing of performance and theatre work. I focus on short performances in particular because of the problems they pose to that economy. In addition to Carpe Minuta Prima, I discuss one to one performances whose short duration is often encouraged by producers due to the limited audience capacity. In this way one to ones present an interesting problem to the circulation of performance. In considering these examples in encountering and negotiating short duration, I ask: what do we pay for in performance and to whom does it matter?" @default.
