- W2065932110 abstract "This commentary is targeted toward younger researchers developing their careers in the hard sciences; it is meant as informal guidance for navigating the peer review process from the reviewer side and hopefully serving as encouragement to take on these tasks. Once you have published a journal article or two, it is only a matter of time before you are asked to peer review submitted articles on related topics. Serving as a peer reviewer is a tough job and may take some time away from your own research. However, reviewing other people’s work is actually very useful for stimulating your own thinking, and perhaps learning how reviewers might respond to your own paper. Also, as practicing scientists and technical experts, we have an obligation to our colleagues to share our knowledge. We rely on the community at large to review our own submitted papers and we expect timely reviews from others. Furthermore, we need to keep in mind that every submitted article requires at least two peer reviews and therefore, in fairness, we should really be reviewing at least two articles for every one we submit. Not only does serving as peer reviewer help us better appreciate and understand what is currently happening in our general field, it also allows us to ‘give back’ to that field. Finally, the fact that you have been asked should be considered a sign of respect from your technical community. In the following, I will share my thoughts on the process of peer review and then some steps as to how to do a useful and credible job." @default.
