- W2065951164 abstract "Prostaglandin 15-hydroxydehydrogenase and 13,14-reductase activities in rat lung varied with age. The most significant feature observed was the different metabolic pattern of foetal rats and the early newborn in comparison with the adult. Very high 13,14-reductase activities were observed in foetal rats (3 day prenatal 273% of adult) and in 1 day postnatal rats (1106% of adult). Reductase activity decreased thereafter with age following a wave-like activity profile also observed for the dehydrogenase. Whereas reductase activity is highest in prenatal and day 1 postnatal rats, dehydrogenase activity is maximal around day 19 postnatally. The ratio of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro to 15-keto metabolites formed (i.e. 15KD:15K) in foetal (3-day prenatal) and early postnatal (day 1) rats was 5 and 6 times respectively the corresponding ratio observed for the adult. The high reductase activity in lung of foetal and early newborn rats is suggestive of an essential requirement for efficient inactivation of prostaglandins and primary metabolites (15-keto) during early development." @default.
