- W2066073009 abstract "Changes in carbon metabolism during the photosynthesis of maize plants with a reduced potassium level were studied. CO 2 exchange rates during photosynthesis, enhanced dark CO 2 fixation, dark respiration and the 14 C distribution within the photosynthetic product fractions and individual photosynthates after 1, 2, 5 and 10 min of 14 CO 2 photosynthesis were compared for seedlings grown on complete and on potassium-deficient nutrient solutions. Leaves of maize seedlings under conditions of potassium deficiency displayed a much lower rate of photosynthesis, but a higher rate of enhanced dark CO 2 fixation than did those of the control. The PS/EnCO 2 ratio, representing the participation of the mesophyll chloroplast stage in the C 4 photosynthesis, was considerably lower for the leaves of these seedlings. Kinetic studies of the 14 C incorporation into photosynthates showed that the mesophyll chloroplast stage intermediates malate and aspartate accumulated during the photosynthesis of potassium-deficient leaves. At the same time, the labelling of the bundle sheath chloroplast stage products PGA, sugar phosphates and sucrose was greatly limited. Additionally, the accumulation of labelled alanine, as well as of glycine and serine, was observed. The decrease in the photosynthetic rates of the potassium-deficient maize seedlings was accompanied by an increase in the dark respiration rates The PS/DR ratio observed for these seedlings was much lower than it was for the control. On the basis of the presented data it is suggested that the regulatory role of potassium in the photosynthesis of C 4 plants consists of the effect of this element on the metabolite transport between the two types of chloroplasts taking part in the photosynthetic CO 2 fixation of these plants." @default.
