- W2066296385 abstract "We present an approach called Multiple Migration Fi t t ing d e s i g n e d t o determine automatically 2-D background velocities from prestack seismic data. In this approach, we maximize a scalar similarity index associated to a collection of migrated sections obtained by various illuminations of the same earth. We use a layered, synthetic velocity model with curvil inear horizons to genera te acous t i c shot gathers. Numerical investigation shows that this similarity index is a rather smooth, nonoscillatory funct ion of ve loc i ty which t e n d s t o b e m a x i m u m f o r g o o d v e l o c i t y profiles, and hence is amenable to maximization by loca l g rad ien t t echn iques . This maximization is practically feasible, as w e p r o v e t h a t t h e e x a c t g r a d i e n t o f t h e s imi lar i ty index can b e c o m p u t e d a t a n additional cost of only twice that required f o r t h e c o m p u t a t i o n o f t h e c o l l e c t i o n o f migrated sections, independent ly of the number of velocity unknowns. A crude, steepest ascent optimization of the similarity index, us ing a hierarchical decomposition of the t r ia l ve loc i ty model , i s shown to p roduce enhanced background velocities and properly located events." @default.
