- W2066325802 abstract "Abstract Aging fields, dwindling production and increasing water cut are major challenges to all operators in the Niger Delta. Thus, finding efficient means to shut-off or control undesirable water production has become paramount. Ironically, the industry does not lack the suite of tools and products to address these problems but, a survey conducted in early 90's estimated that the world wide success percentage of water shut-off was a mere 35%. Identified as key to the poor performance are the deficient problem diagnosis and inappropriate remedial interventions. This low success ratio ultimately led to the loss of confidence in the use of rigid polymers for water shut-off. Although the chemistry of these rigid polymers are robust and well-proven1,2,3,4, the poor result recorded with them heightened most operator's reluctance to use them for water shut-off operations. This paper addresses a Through Tubing (TT) water shut-off successfully carried out, using a rigid polymer. Identified early was the need for additional data to properly define the problem. Following data acquisition, water encroachment in some of the perforations was established. The diagnosis also identified an undrained interval located beneath the flooded zone. A multidisciplinary team was set up to review all data and advance the most economic and cost effective intervention option. The main challenges including maintaining through bore accessibility, easy wash-out etc. were listed. This led to the choice of a rigid polymer (MaraSEAL), which resulted in the desired solution5,6.
