The thermal gradient was at a maximum during the October through January interval and at a minimum for the February‐March interval. This pattern suggests that the fat stores of the animal affect its heat conservation capabilities and possibly the manner of temperature regulation. Seasonal variations in temperature regulation for hibernators are well documented (Hammel, 1968; Hammel et al., 1963; Jansky, 1973; Satinoff, 1978; Cabanac, 1976; Heller and Hammel, 1972). A major focus of these articles has been the response of a hibernator to ambient and/or internal temperatures. Spermophilus tridecimlineatus is a well characterized hibernator that shows strong responses to these stresses both in nature and in the laboratory (Kayser, 1961; Hammel, 1968; Hellerand Hammel, 1972; Mrosovsky, 1971). Many hibernators exhibit circannual rhythms of adaptation that anticipate recurring environmental stress including changes in weight, body fat, hormone levels and renal function (Pengelley and Fischer, 1961, 1963; Hoffman and Zarrow, 1958; Zatzman and South, 1981). Many of these changes also affect the temperature regulation system's function in addition to their more obvious function. For example, changes in the adipose tissue quantities would have an effect on heat loss in addition to providing food stores for the animal." @default.
