- W2066562275 abstract "Electrodischarge compaction (EDC) is a very effective method of producing alloys that cannot be produced by conventional alloying methods. The feasibility of this method for producing alloy sources for vapor deposition was evaluated by using a Ni–Co model system. Three compositions of Ni–Co alloy powders, 75%Ni–25%Co, 50%Ni–50%Co, and 25%Ni–75%Co by weight, were compacted by application of a high-voltage, high-density current through a powder column for about 200 μs. The compacted alloys were then evaporated on silicon substrates from an integrated alumina-tungsten crucible. The thin alloy films were studied by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) depth profiling using Ar+ sputtering to etch the surface. Results of the depth profiling analysis of the deposited alloy films showed that they were of the desired compositions and the film compositions were very uniform indicating that the method of alloy source synthesis is successful. Transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction studies confirmed the presence of an alloy phase. This new method of synthesis of alloy sources is not limited to alloy systems composed of metals of a similar character but can also be extended to alloy systems with greater dissimilarity between the individual components." @default.
