- W2066572009 abstract "The increasing utilization of sentinel node biopsy for staging the axilla in patients with operable breast cancer and the demonstration of significant pathologic downstaging of involved axillary lymph nodes with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, have provided the opportunity to explore whether the extent of axillary surgery can be reduced with the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and sentinal node biopsy. Because there are several unique questions regarding the performance of sentinal node biopsy after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, demonstration of the feasibility and efficacy of this procedure in this particular setting is necessary before this approach can be widely adopted in clinical practice. This manuscript addresses diagnostic approaches in the axilla in patients who are candidates for neoadjuvant chemotherapy, discusses surgical issues in the management of axillary nodes before and after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, examines the performance characteristics of sentinal node biopsy in this setting, and outlines some of the future research directions in axillary lymph node management in patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy." @default.
