- W2066702331 abstract "When performing high intensity resistance training, it is important to consider the recovery mode between training sessions. PURPOSE To determine if mode of recovery affects vertical jump and lactate levels after high intensity resistance exercise. METHODS Nine healthy men underwent three squat complex (lunges, step-ups, squats, un-weighted squat jumps, ten times each) resistance exercise sessions followed by 10 min. of cycling, dynamic movement exercises, or passive seated recovery. Each experimental session consisted of a standard warm-up, a pre-exercise vertical jump test, three sets of a squat complex (25% squat exercise max), a 10 min. recovery, and a post-exercise vertical jump test. All subjects performed the experimental sessions spaced one week apart; the mode of recovery was randomized. Blood samples were collected before warm up and after 10 min. of recovery, then analyzed for lactate. RESULTS A repeated measures ANOVA showed that the post-exercise impairment in vertical jump ability was significantly greater after passive seated recovery (−1.67 ± 0.56 in.) than with both cycling (−0.94 ± 0.91 in.) and dynamic movement recovery (−0.78 ± 0.75 in., p <0.05). Differences between the 10 min. recovery and pre-exercise lactate levels tended to be higher for the passive seated recovery group (5.89 ± 3.12 mmol/L) than for both cycling recovery (3.98 ± 2.12 mmol/L) and dynamic movement recovery (4.55 ± 2.67 mmol/L), but the results were not significant. A correlation between decline in vertical jump and increased lactate levels was observed (r = 0.469, p <0.05). CONCLUSION In these subjects, vertical jump impairment after squat complex exercise was significantly greater with passive recovery than both stationary cycling and dynamic movement recovery. Impairment was moderately related to blood lactate concentration. (Supported by HLKN Graduate Student Minigrant)" @default.
