- W2067066857 abstract "The impact of intrafamilial sexual abuse (e.g., incest) on a child’s long-term psychosocial functioning has been of great concern to many social science and clinical researchers in recent decades (Briere, 1992; Herman, 1981; Russel, 1986). Studies of incestuously abused females report high levels of anxiety (Edwards & Donaldson, 1986; Elliot & Briere, 1992) and depression (Johnson & Kenkel, 1991; Pribor & Dinwiddie, 1992), low self-esteem (Briere & Runtze, 1988; Murphy et al., 1988), somatic complaints (Briere & Runtze, 1988; Bryer, Nelson, Miller, & Krol, 1987; Greenwald, Leitenberg, Cado, & Tarran, 1990; Morrison, 1989), dissociative disorders (Chu & Dill, 1990), interpersonal and social isolation (Harter, Alexander, & Neimeyer, 1988; Russel, 1986) and sexual difficulties (Tsai, Feldman-Summers, & Edgar, 1979). Many survivors often hold the distorted belief that they are responsible for the abuse perpetrated against them, which results in feelings of self-blame (Derek, 1989; Bruckner & Johnson, 1987). The recovery from childhood maltreatment is influenced by individual differences in the cognitive processing of the abusive experience such as causal attributions (Gold, 1986) and feelings of stigma and self-blame (Coffey, Leitenberg, Henning, Turner, & Bennet, 1996). From clinical observations, it seems that the stronger the feelings of self-blame, shame, anger and distrust in one’s self-control, the greater the difficulty of talking about past traumatic experiences, even to one’s therapist (Derek, 1989; Forward, 1990). The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the effectiveness of drawings (art therapy) in encouraging verbalization in an adult survivor of sexual abuse. This is presented through a description of four therapeutic sessions (out of 24) with an adult female who was sexually abused by her father in childhood." @default.
