• W2067157074 abstract "A linear eight-box model is constructed for the tropospheric global sulfur cycle to examine sulfur burdens in the upper, middle and lower troposphere. Transfer and emission rates derived from estimates of atmospheric fluxes in the literature are used to solve the continuity equations of the system. The time dependent sulfur burdens, steady state SO2SO42− ratios, and scale heights in various atmospheric regions are calculated, and the sensitivities of sulfate aerosol burdens to meteorological and chemical processes are determined. The calculated steady state SO2 and sulfate aerosol burdens, SO2SO42− ratios, and scale heights are found to agree with existing data to within a factor of about two. The response times of the system after sudden perturbation of the upper troposphere (such as, for example, volcanic eruption) are shown to be about four days for sulfur gases and twelve days for sulfate aerosols. Examination of the sensitivities of the steady state and time dependent predictions of the model suggests that the most important transfer rates to be measured are those of cloud entrainment and detrainment (lateral and vertical), in-cloud oxidation and sulfate removal." @default.
