- W2067227922 abstract "Abstract A method was developed for the agglomeration of synthetic rubber latices from an initial particle size of 0.05–0.10 μm to sizes of about 1.0 μm. Hydrolysis of the fatty acid soap used during the emulsion polymerization is accomplished by adding an acid anhydride. This technique avoids coagulum formation which would occur if the weak acid were added directly. After the latex and anhydride are well mixed, no further agitation is employed. Agglomeration, which proceeds through Brownian motion-induced collisions of the destabilized particles, occurs within 30 min. The latex is then stabilized by either adding a base to regenerate the fatty acid soap or by adding a surfactant that is effective at lower pH values. The final particle size distributions, while not absolutely monodisperse, were monomodal and relatively sharp. At a constant anhydride level, the average agglomerated size increased with latex solids, salt level, and time (over the first 30 min). The use of a styrene as a comonomer had little effect but acrylonitrile at the 5–10% level greatly increased the tendency to agglomerate." @default.
