- W2067237560 abstract "My purpose in this short note is to describe the unconformity at the base of the Carboniferous Limestone in the region between Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent in its relationship to the broader structures of the older rocks below. The older rocks of this region are exposed in the bottoms of the valleys of Crummackdale and Ribblesdale and in the valley connecting the two, between Hellwith Bridge and Wharfe, while the high ground is occupied by the Carboniferous rocks. (See Map Fig. 1). For the most part, the older rocks are of Upper Ordovician and Silurian age, with the possible exception of the Ingletonian Series, which has been claimed as pre-Cambrian by Dr. R. H. Rastall. The Ingletonian rocks, which, whatever their age, are certainly the oldest rocks in the region, are composed of highly cleaved and much contorted slates with thin grit bands. The Upper Ordovician rocks are, for the most part, calcareous mudstones with frequent limestone nodules, but they contain also at least two bands of ash. The mudstones have been cleaved—but not to so marked a degree as the rocks of the Ingletonian Series,—and, with the exception of the ash beds, behave as soft rocks under the action of weathering. The Silurian succession comprises a bed of sandy mudstone about 100 feet thick—the Austwick Flags, followed by a sandstone series—the Austwick Grits, about 700 feet thick, then by about 2000 feet of sandy mudstone—the Horton Flags, and finally by a second sandstone series—the …" @default.
