- W2067255280 abstract "Spination in marine pseudomonad D71 is progressively inhibited by phenethyl alcohol, over the range of 0.006 to 0.04%, without either bacterial morphology, growth, or overall protein composition being significantly affected. If 0.04% phenethyl alcohol is present at the time of shift of an unspined culture to spina-promoting conditions, the culture remains unspined; delayed addition of phenethyl alcohol after shift may inhibit the establishment of new base structures, but does not prevent the extension (growth) of spinae already present. Spinin cannot be detected in the medium of inhibited cultures and since the continued extension of spinae in the presence of phenethyl alcohol can be accounted for as continued expression of a stable mRNA, the results are compatible with the hypothesis that phenethyl alcohol can inhibit expression of spinin genes as well as initiation of spinae construction without affecting either translocation or subsequent assembly of spinin. Continued division of spined bacteria in the presence of phenethyl alcohol leads eventually to a decrease in both the average number of spinae per cell and the proportion of spined bacteria, but at higher concentrations division, but not necessarily growth, is also inhibited leading to extremely long bacteria with polar spinae; unspined bacteria seem less affected. Spination is not affected by phenethyl alcohol in Agrobacterium E59, a constitutively spinate bacterium, suggesting a possible correlation between the mechanisms of phenethyl alcohol inhibition and spina induction." @default.
