• W2067338969 abstract "Abstract The studies described indicate that temperature can play an unexpectedly important role in the growth, virulence, and population changes of an animal virus. Strain B, a recently isolated strain of avian bronchitis virus, was lethal for eggs incubated at 38° but not 34°, following allantoic inoculation. The ultimate yield of virus in eggs kept at these temperatures was identical, although the rate of viral multiplication at 34° was considerably slower. Both a sparing effect and delay in death resulted when eggs infected with the B strain were exposed to a temperature change from 38° to 34°, depending upon the time when the change was made. On the other hand, strain A, an egg-adapted strain, was lethal for eggs incubated at 34° or 38° and was pathogenic for suckling mice following intracerebral inoculation. Unlike the B strain, strain A produced lesions on the chorioallantois and killed eggs when inoculated via this route. When strain A was maintained in the brain of suckling mice for twenty-five serial passages, the original population was replaced by one that was lethal for eggs incubated at 34° but not at 38°, the apparent optimum temperature for this virus. Conversely, after several passages in the allantoic sac of eggs incubated at 38°, a subline was obtained which killed embryos more slowly at 34° and more rapidly at 38° than the parent virus; in addition, it was less virulent for suckling mice." @default.
