- W2067762014 abstract "The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Computer Science and Applications, Inc. (CSA) model 7164 physical activity monitor in preschool children. Fifteen, 3–5 year old children performed five, three-min structured activities while wearing a CSA monitor on each hip. The activity intensities corresponded to intensity levels based on a modified Child Activity Rating Scale observation system. Validity was also assessed during simultaneous one-hour observations while wearing the CSA monitor during various day care activities. Stability reliability was assessed by multiple days of CSA monitoring at a separate day care facility. The pearson correlation between left and right hip CSA monitors for all five structured activities was r = 0.86 (range 0.59 to 0.89). Only right CSA monitor data were used for the rest of the analyses. Mean CSA counts per 15-second epoch were significantly different across the five activities (p < 0.05). Minute-by-minute heart rate recordings also indicated significantly different heart rates across the five activities (p < 0.05). CSA counts were categorized by intensity using a regression equation to predict counts from age and observation scores. Observations were made by three trained observers (inter-observer reliability, R = 0.996). The Kappa statistic across all subjects indicates a good level of agreement between the CSA monitor and direct observation (K = 0.694). Acceptable stability of physical activity was established after six days (6.26 hours day−1) of CSA monitoring (R = 0.701). These results indicate that the CSA monitor can be used as a valid measure of physical activity in preschool children but six days of monitoring were needed to represent usual physical activity at this day care setting.
