- W2068143773 abstract "Personal persistence plays a significant role in the entrepreneurial process, maintaining goal pursuit in the face of obstacles, setbacks and uncertainty. In this paper, we present a theory of the origins of entrepreneurial persistence, drawing from social cognitive theories of self-regulation and motivation. Specifically, according to Higgins´ Regulatory Focus Theory, the psychological origins of persistence are in engagement strength, motivational force intensity and the value experience of goal pursuit. Building upon this theory, we conceptualize the sources of entrepreneurial engagement strength and its role in persistence within entrepreneurial processes. We also theorize about the influence of positive value experience in continued multiple goal pursuit throughout the entrepreneurial process. We thus propose a theoretical explanation for what keeps entrepreneurs entrepreneurial over time: we argue it is not only the pursuit of venture creation, but also the strength of engagement with the entrepreneurial process itself and the value derived from its experiential quality. Our research introduces the concept of strength of engagement in entrepreneurial goal pursuit at the individual level and adds to the growing literature on regulatory focus theory and the entrepreneurial process." @default.
