Abstract Following the hypothesis of Georgi et al. (1983) on the existence of massive photons, their effect on the spectral behavior of the cosmic background dipole anisotropy has been investigated. A distortion was found increasing with wavelength to such an extent that the direction of the dipole anisotropy can be reversed. The best fit of the available experimental data gives a value for the photon mass of about 2.9 x 10 to the -51st g with Chi-X squared/DOF = 0.53, while the best fit with a pure blackbody has Chi-X squared/DOF = 1.32. However, the evidence for massive photons is based essentially on the long wavelength dipole anisotropy data, which are the oldest and least reliable.
