- W2068173712 abstract "YIG:Ca films (Ca=0.23 afu) are subjected to extended annealing treatments in H2 atmosphere at increasing temperatures and the effects on the structure are investigated by double-crystal x-ray diffraction and magneto-optical measurements. Initially, an elastic expansion of the lattice constant a⊥ from 12.3755 to 12.3798 Å is observed in the direction orthogonal to the film surface, which operates uniformly over the film bulk, while the Fe4+ population goes to zero as a result of the Fe4+→Fe3+ reduction. After completion of the Fe4+ reduction, an inward collapse of the lattice occurs, of about 0.02 Å, starting from the surface and extending to thicker layers as the reduction cycle continues. The x-ray diffraction profiles exhibit Pendellösung interference and the thin surface layer is further studied by a successive-etching experiment. This layer is found to form epitaxially over the film bulk, thus producing a lateral stress, and presents a strain profile at the layer-bulk interface. Intense near-infrared magnetic circular dichroism is observed, which results from Fe3+→Fe2+ reduction. The surface layer formation is totally reversible by annealing in O2." @default.
