Carr, John S. Abstract Near-infrared spectra for 40 young stellar objects were analyzed in order to search for CO overtone emission at 2.3 microns. CO bands were identified in the emission of nine sources, suggesting that about 20 percent of young stellar objects with outflows have CO vibrational band emission. Results show that an accretion disk can produce the observed CO band-head fluxes with accretion rates of 10 to the -8th to a few 10 to the -7th solar masses/yr. Under the assumptions of a neutral stellar wind with a velocity of 100-300 km/s, a cool gas, and carbon predominantly in the form of CO, mass loss rates ranging from a few 10 to the -7th solar masses/yr to a few 10 to the -5th solar masses/yr are required to fit the observed CO flux.
