- W206818829 abstract "In this chapter the basic aspects of the chemistry and spectroscopy of photochemical hole-burning (PHB) are developed. A comparison with the techniques of transient hole-burning in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and optical spectroscopy clearly illustrates that the chemical nature of the PHB method has far-reaching consequences: Not only fast relaxation processes in the time regime between femtoseconds and nanoseconds can be investigated, but also very slow relaxation processes which occur on time scales of seconds to years. This is due to the irreversible and stable nature of the photochemical change which is induced via laser irradiation. This irradiation creates a photochemical “memory” which is sensitive to slow matrix changes in the long time domain. These matrix changes, which generally lead to changes of the observed PHB spectra and which are discussed in conjunction with the spectroscopic term of “spectral diffusion”, are of special relevance for the understanding of amorphous solids, a class of materials that is characterized by a non-equilibrum state of the pertinent microscopic parameters, describing the multidimensional configurational space of a glass. At present, and in the near future, the main challenge for the spectroscopist will be to correlate microscopic and macroscopic matrix parameters with the observed spectral features of PHB spectroscopy." @default.
