- W2068263212 abstract "Wettability measurements coupled with surface energy analysis is applied as a nondestructive evaluation method for characterizing the surface energy degradation of sulfuric-chromate etched aluminum alloy Al 2024-T3 at 23°C. Surface treated Al 2024-T3 when exposed to ambient laboratory atmosphere at controlled humidity, displays a coherent time dependence of wettability that depends on the polar-nonpolar character of liquid surface tension properties. Analysis of wettability data isolates the (London-d) dispersion γsvd and (Keesom-p) polar γsvp components of the solid-vapor surface tension γsv = γsvd + γsvP. Application of kinetic models for environmental degradation define an apparent first-order kinetics for the minimization of γsvp and γsv while γsvd remains essentially constant. The rate of surface energy degradation is minimized at extreme low (⋍0.016%) and high (⋍100%) relative humidity at 23°C with relaxation times τ ⩾ 2 × 104 min. At intermediate relative humidity (12 and 33%) the relaxation time for surface energy degradation is minimized (τ ⩽ 2 × 103 min). The kinetic model for surface energy degradation is applied to superimpose data from seven moisture exposure conditions at 23°C on “master curves” of reduced surface exposure time (t/τ) versus γsv, γsvP, or γsvd." @default.
