- W2068322503 abstract "To the Editor.— The article by Porter and Hartman entitled Arthus Reactions From Insulin Association With Lupus Erythematosus Cell Phenomena (214:1884, 1970) demands critical comment. Although admittedly the case is reported under BRIEF REPORTS, no data are given to substantiate the thesis that this patient manifested arthus reactivity. The role of arthus reactivity is speculative, a point not made sufficiently clear in the article or the title. Because of the elevated IgG and prolonged half-life of insulin I 131, I suggest the presence of anti-insulin antibodies in this patient. There is no evidence, however, for the conclusion that this caused a specific local hypersensitivity reaction. The evolution of the local reactions was delayed, and this may be an example of cellular hypersensitivity rather than arthus sensitivity. Other features including eosinophilia and symptoms of shortness of breath, erythema of the malar eminence, and facial swelling suggest an anaphylactic or type" @default.
