- W2068483276 abstract "Gas-solid reactions date back several centuries B.C. to when Aristotle postulated his famous principle of the four elements. He postulated that all materials could be characterized by combinations of at least two of the four elements, earth, which is cold and dry, water, which is cold and humid, air, which is warm and humid, and fire, which is warm and dry. The two properties associated with each element, the so-called ‘primae qualitates’ are as important as the four elements themselves. These two properties allow the four elements to transform into each other and make it possible to specify the composition of a given material. Earth predominates in heavy solids such as metals, although the presence of water is also required to explain why metals melt upon heating. Gas-solid reactions take the form of earth-fire combinations within this postulate." @default.
