Except for radicle emergence of subclover in 0.5 MPa, root protrusion, water uptake, and enzymic activity were higher under NaCl than under PEG. Nevertheless, PEG had no harmful effects on the germination process since at the end of the recovery period the emergence rates were very similar to those of the control for all species. Hyden's quantitative method for PEG proved that PEG did not penetrated beyond the seed coat. Therefore, PEG can be satisfactorily used in simulation studies dealing with the effect that drought causes in germination. Differences between species and cultivars could conceivably be due to differences in seed tissue resistance to desiccation, osmotic adjustment (water stress), or osmoregulation (salt stress) between them when subjected to salt or water stress. For all treatments, Medicago sativa seeds showed a greater α-galactosidase activity than the clovers. However, Medicago «Tierra de Campos» which in previous works has been shown to be better adapted to drought and salinity than the other plants after reaching the adult stage, did not have any adaptive advantage in the germination stage as compared with the other ones. Under stress, subclover showed the highest radicle emergence but lowest α-galactosidase activity. The small amount of galactomannan found in the endosperm shows that such polysaccharides are not important in the germinative physiology of an annual plant of typical Mediterranean origin, such as subclover." @default.
