- W2068578723 abstract "Abstract Administration of naloxone (Nal), an opioid antagonist and measurement of resulting changes in plasma concentration of luteinizing hormone (LH) were used to determine the influence of endogenous opioids on gonadotropin secretion in immature gilts. Nal (0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 mg kg −1 liveweight) or saline were injected as a bolus intra-venously in six gilts aged around 50 days. Each female received the various treatments at 2- or 3-day intervals in a Latin-square design. Serial blood sampling began 4 h before and lasted until 6 h after injection. The samples were taken every 10 min for the first hour after injection and every 20 min at other times. Fewer LH pulses were detected following Nal injection; their number during the 3 h following injection decreased with the dose of Nal used (saline: 0.7±0.2 pulse, 0.5 mg Nal kg −1 : 0.5±0.2 pulse, 1.0 mg Nal kg −1 : 0.5±0.2 pulse, 2.0 mg Nal kg −1 : 0.0±0.0 pulse, mean ± SEM, P = 0.02). Mean hormone levels during this period also tended to decrease ( P =0.09) while magnitude of pulses and baseline were not affected by Nal injection ( P >0.1). This experiment shows an inhibitory rather than a stimulatory effect of Nal upon LH secretion, the origin of which is not known." @default.
