- W2068635283 abstract "Four niche dimensions, food, habitat (depth intervals), time (times of the day) and season (spring, summer and fall) were studied in a nearshore fish species assemblage in the Bothnian Sea, Sweden, to analyse for the presence of competition. Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas), Gasterosteus aculeatus (L.), Pungitiuspungitius (L.), Perca fluviatilis L. and Pomatoschistus microps (Kroyer) occurred in sufficient numbers for further analysis. The environment has predictable but low salinities (≈5%.) and unpredictable temperature fluctuations among years.Fish samples were taken every 4 h during a 24-h period in each May, August and September 1982. Bottom fauna samples were taken randomly in the same months. There was an increase in fish abundance during the night in all 3 months. In August the abundance was four times as high as in May and twice as high as in September. In May and August the highest abundances were found in the deep habitat and in September in the shallowest habitat. Chironomid larvae were the most frequently consumed food items in all 3 months. P. minutus was the most abundant species on all three sampling occasions. In August P. minutus made up >95% of the fish assemblage and the intraspecific relationships of this species were studied. The few significant correlations between the parameters considered (species abundance, relative proportion of a species in the assemblage, niche widths, niche overlaps and stomach fullness) give no support for resource partitioning as an important structuring mechanism in the assemblage. Food is not limited because the estimated food requirements of the fish were calculated to be <3.5% of the benthic fauna biomass in any of the months. Rather, the brief history of the Bothnian Sea and the extreme and unpredictable environment prevents coevolutionary responses and the shallow areas are inhabited by populations of fish species which live more or less independently of one another." @default.
