- W2068868963 abstract "The levels of dietary histidine for maximal rates of growth and food intake and their relationships with zinc and copper status were evaluated in weanling male rats fed diets containing graded levels of histidine at 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.6%. The maximal rate of growth, as calculated by a mathematical model, was reached at 0.40% of dietary histidine and food intake was normalized at 0.30% of histidine. The serum levels of zinc were increased, while copper levels were decreased, with increasing dietary histidine. A strong inverse relationship between serum zinc and copper was observed between 0.00 and 0.40% of dietary histidine. The ratio of zinc to copper increased linearly with increasing levels of dietary histidine, plateauing at 0.40%. The results suggest that the status of zinc and copper, as affected by dietary histidine and the interaction between the two minerals, may be an important determinant of the rate of growth and food intake and may serve as a useful index in assessing the adequacy of dietary histidine." @default.
