- W2068880508 abstract "Subclover (Trifolium subterraneum L.), an annual legume native to the Mediterranean basin, has been used extensively for range and pasture improvement in Australia, and many cultivars are routinely recommended for use in northern California and Oregon where rainfall amounts and distribution are adequate. A 7-yr study was implemented to determine if hardseeded Spanish-origin subclover lines subsp. subterraneum could be found, that were adapted to southern foothill and coastal areas of California, where rainfall amounts and distribution are less dependable than in northern California. Low estrogenic activity was also a desirable characteristic. Five hard-seeded subclover lines of Spanish-origin were evaluated in two southern California locations and compared with three early-maturing Australian subclover cultivars (‘Nun-garin’, ‘Geraldton’, and ‘Daliak’). After 7 yr of evaluation, four of the five Spanish lines had equal or higher stand counts than the most persistent Australian cultivar, ‘Geraldton’, a cultivar of known potential estrogenetic activity. Low estrogenic activity was identified in two of the most persistent Spanish lines. These two lines will be composited and moved into the cultivar release stages of development." @default.
