- W2068909305 abstract "Basic research in animals has elucidated many of the underlying mechanisms of cognition. This work has resulted in a better understanding of the cognitive problems seen in geriatrics. In particular, work with animal models of Alzheimer's disease has suggested a host of new treatment strategies. In contrast to the minimally effective treatments currently in clinical use, work in animal models of Alzheimer's disease suggests that even well-established cognitive impairments may be reversible. Insights into cognition promises hope for other conditions in geriatrics in which learning or memory may be impaired, such as benign forgetfulness and multi-infarct dementia. Here, we first review some of the new treatment strategies being examined in animal models of Alzheimer's disease. This largely focuses on ways to reverse the toxicity of amyloid beta protein (AßP). Second, we review some of the basic findings about cognition in general that may be important not only in Alzheimer's disease but also in other conditions associated with aging. We do this by focusing on proteins other than AßP that are important in cognition." @default.
