- W2068932347 abstract "Abstract The transition from a lizard-like skull to an ophidian skull is characterized by two divergent trends: 1) reduction of the chondrocranium, middle ear, circumorbital bones, upper temporal arcade, and connections among bones of the snout, palate and jaws, and 2) increased ossification of the braincase and dermal roofing bones. Examination of the temporal sequence of chondrocranium and osteocranium development in lepidosaurian embryos shows that some of these changes entail loss of features ossifying late in ontogeny. These changes are consistent with the hypothesis of heterochrony affecting late stage ossification, and have important functional implications. For example, the reduction of late-appearing connections among palatal, snout and jaw bones allows unilateral movement during swallowing, a mechanism unique to snakes. In contrast, changes that occur early in ontogeny, such as reduction of the chondrocranium, are not easily accounted for by such a simple model. Unfortunately, the causal processes underlying the temporal patterns of change described are not known. The occurrence of similar trends among diverse groups of lizards suggests that morphological change in squamate reptiles has been constrained by a common developmental program." @default.
