In the future organisational success will be based on focusing all strategies, decisions, collective energy and activity on maximising customers' benefit per dollar (BPD). In any industry, companies which achieve success in this regard will dominate traditional, continuously improving rivals. BPD-focused companies will have much more effective strategic decision processes than traditional companies and have truly prioritised the influence of activities which directly add value and influence BPD such as engineering, line operations and marketing relative to support activities such as information provision (traditionally accounting and information systems). We outline the new priorities for each of these functions. Accelerating international competitiveness will increasingly drive companies to ensure that all activities and agendas are derived from the principle of BPD maximisation. Although different market segments will always exist, companies will not be able to undertake pure cost leadership or pure differentiation positions. Reflecting consumer choice processes of maximising ‘benefits per dollar’, supply companies must increasingly compete on both costs and benefits simultaneously. More benefits are expected today than previously from low-end, no-frills products and price competition of luxury-end products has never been fiercer. Strategic decision paths will be to deduce product/service benefits from knowledge of customer requirements, translate these into features and designs then find the lowest cost path to manufacture and delivery of those benefits. This very focused process is in sharp contrast to traditional processes having cross-functional teams designing products to cost budgets." @default.
