- W2069219384 abstract "Biota of isolated oceanic islands are unusually susceptible to disturbance by human occupation. Másatierra, a mid-latitude high volcanic island, was not discovered and settled until well into the historic period and documentary records show the transformation of the natural landscape follows patterns observed on many islands. Among the introduced mammals only the goat proliferated initially. Their numbers and distribution changed when predators became established. The growth of populations of dogs, cats and rats on the island corresponded with the decline of the native ground nesting sea bird, seal and sea lion populations although direct killing by humans was clearly a factor. Deforestation and selective exploitation of native trees led to their decline, and in some cases extinction. Introduced crop and weed species increased rapidly but some subsequently disappeared reflecting the instability of populations in disturbed landscapes." @default.
