- W2069279022 abstract "Studies on the relationship between nutrition of plants and severity of diseases have indicated that nutrition is one of the factors which has a measurable effect upon the course of disease development. Since fertilizer treatments and environmental conditions affect specific host plants and pathogens differently, it is important to obtain precise knowledge of the relationships between these factors. This study deals with the relationship between zinc nutrition of the tomato and susceptibility to Phytophthora infestans causing Late Blight. Most investigations on this subject (11, 23, 24, 26, 30, 31, 32, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38) have dealt principally with the three fertilizer elements, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. In general, high nitrogen applications have increased the susceptibility of plants to disease organisms, while high potassium applications have increased the plants' resistance; but results have been inconsistent in several cases. These studies have seldom included leaf analyses so that the actual nutritional status of the plants was not taken into consideration. At times, nutrition seemed to be related to the vigor of the plants; but several other factors unquestionably were involved." @default.
