- W2069291289 abstract "So far the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) research has mainly focused on the investigation of ordered systems like reconstructed metal and semiconductor surfaces as well as graphite surfaces. In this paper we want to discuss whether STM can also be applied to study amorphous structures on a near atomic scale with emphasis on metallic glasses. We have performed STM measurements on glassy Rh25-Zr75 which give indications for the existence of nanocrystallites within X-ray amorphous samples. It was possible to distinguish between amorphous and crystalline-like areas by using STM. High resolution images of the topography and the local tunneling barrier height of the amorphous areas could provide new information about short and medium range order of metallic glass surfaces if the electronic surface structure and the atomic surface structure can be correlated." @default.
