- W2069306098 abstract "ABSTRACT Phase conjugate mirrors based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in multimode undoped quartz fibers can be operatedwith high reflectivity. The reflectivity and threshold of the SBS process and the damage threshold of the fiber entrancesurface were measured for fibers with core diameter of 25, 50, 100, 200 tm. With calibration of the measurement systemsuch fibers can operate with more than 80% reflectivity and the damage threshold lies above 0.9 GW/cm2. The SBSthreshold is between 0.3 and 26 kW for all fibers investigated. Keywords: phase conjugation, stimulated Brillouin scattering, optical fibers 1. INTRODUCTION Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is one ofthe important nonlinear effects in the interaction ofelectromagnetic radiationof optical frequencies with matter. It can occur in solid state media as well as in liquids and gases.SBS, first observed in 1964, has been studied extensively. It originates from scattering of light by acoustical phonons andmanifests through the generation of a backward-propagating Stokes wave, which 'is downshifted in frequency from theincident pump by an amount determined by the nonlinear medium. One interesting property of SBS is the reversal of thewavefront of the reflected beam, also referred to as phase conjugation. SBS is commonly used in optical phase conjugation" @default.
