- W2069458512 abstract "Abstract Neural mechanisms of lameness evoked by impulses from the inflamed area on the hind limb were investigated in adult cats. It was established that the long-lasting barrage of the impulses from the inflamed tissues in the hind limb facilitates the flexor monosynaptic reflexes and primary cortical responses evoked by testing volleys in afferents of the damaged hind limb. The primary responses do not change, however, if they are evoked by stimulation of the central structures (spinocervical tract, medial lemniscus, or ventral posterolateral nucleus of of the thalamus). Hence, facilitation of the primary responses depends on the increase of the excitability in the first synaptic relay of the spinocervical tract. Subconvulsive doses of strychnine (0.05–0.1 mg/kg) have a much greater facilitatory action on the polysynaptic reflexes and on the cortical responses elicited by volleys in the afferents of the damaged hind limb compared to those evoked from the undamaged one. Thus, impulses from the inflamed tissues not only facilitate, but also inhibit the neurons receiving the messages from the damaged hind limb. There is no evident influence of the inflamed tissues on the P wave of the cord dorsum potentials. Impulses from the inflamed tissues depress the descending influences (from the pyramidal tract) as well as the influences from the flexor reflex afferents of the undamaged hind limb on the flexor reflexes of the damaged one. The possible mechanisms and significance of such a kind of “functional isolation” of the damaged organ are discussed." @default.
