- W2069508491 abstract "Although antithyroid effect(s) of sulfonylurea drugs have been demonstrated both in animals and man, hypothyroidism due to long-term use of these drugs has not been reported in several comprehensive reviews. Hunton et al.,9 however, have recently reported a significantly greater incidence of hypothyroidism in patients on sulfonylurea drugs when compared with a like number of diabetics treated by other means. Since no evidence of sulfonylurea-induced hypothyroidism was apparent from superficial review of our diabetic clinic population, detailed studies of thyroid function (24-hour thyroidal I131 uptake, plasma PBI, and I131-T3-resin uptake) were performed in a randomly selected group of diabetics in order to assess the effect of long-term sulfonylurea (as opposed to insulin) therapy. The data so obtained afford no evidence whatever of any antithyroid effect(s) of long-term sulfonylurea therapy. In view of the clinical implications of the divergent conclusions enunciated elsewhere,9 it is hoped that prospective serial studies of thyroid function in our newly diagnosed diabetic population may permit definitive resolution of the issue." @default.
