- W2069654002 abstract "The treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has been largely limited to the treatment of its complications--namely the opportunistic tumors and infections. Most of the infections are due to reactivation of latent organisms in the host or in some cases to ubiquitous organisms to which we are continuosly exposed. In general the treatment of these infections suppresses rather than eradicates the organisms so relapse is common when treatment is stopped. The side effects of many of the drugs used do not easily permit the long term treatment that is needed. This article summarizes the accepted treatment modalities for the following complications of AIDS: 1) pneumocstis carinii pneumonia 2) toxoplasmosis 3) cryptosporidiosis 4) herpes simplex viruses 5) fungal infections 6) bacterial pneumonias and skin infections 7) gum and periodontal disease 8) mycobacterium tuberculoss infections 9) mycobacterium avium intracellulare infections and 10) varicella zoster virus infections. Finally the ideal characteristics of effective antiviral agents are discussed." @default.
