- W2069777380 abstract "RATIONALE: Printed education materials are often used to augment healthcare professionals' verbal information to patients. However 1 in 4 patients have low levels of literacy. Readability formulae allow us to assess the complexity of the text. Sometimes methods based on word length are criticised because they disregard patients' familiarity with the vocabulary that is associated with their illness, thereby overestimating the difficulty of the text. In this review we loked at the impact of removing familiar words. METHODS: SMOG (Simple Measure of Gobbledegook) scoring of AAAAI leaflets in their entirety and then after removing familiar allergy related words (eg allergists, allergic, allergens, allergenic etc). RESULTS: Tips to Remember brochures have SMOG scores ranging from 11.49 to 16.78, i.e. requiring successful completion of education between ‘some high school education’ and a ‘university degree’. Removing the word ‘allergy’ and its derivatives from the scoring made very little difference, eg.the score of the most readable leaflet shifted from 11.49 to 10.68, but this makes no impact on the educational attainment required by hte reader. The most demanding of AAAAI leaflets have SMOG scores similar to editorials in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunolgy 2004-2006. Revisions made to leaflets between 2003 and 2006 tended to increase the readability scores. CONCLUSIONS: Many leaflets are not accessible to all patients because of their high readability scores. Therefore it is important we remember to select materials appropriate to our patients level of literacy and to strive for a range of readability scores when writing new materials." @default.
