- W206978636 abstract "This article is the first of two which endeavour to explore the link between the Pentecostal movement in Western societies (here Pentecostalism in the USA and Britain is discussed) and the theme of deprivation. While extant literature establishes such a link, scholars have often approached the field of study from rather distinctive perspectives and emphasize different aspects of Pentecostalism in dealing with a wide range of deprivations. In this article I overview the major contribution of writers from various disciplines, including sociologist, historians and theologians, to our understanding of so-called 'classical' Pentecostalism. Many such works show how the relationship with deprivation is a complex and varying one and intimately bound up with an appeal to distinct social groups. The second paper will attempt the same enterprise with reference to the neo-Pentecostal movement that arose in the 1960s. The second article will also offer a broad critique of this approach, although an ongoing critique is also included in this first article." @default.
