- W2070068314 abstract "Abstract Piperalin is a fungicide used for the control of powdery mildews on ornamentals, but there is no reported evidence of its mechanism of action. This report demonstrates that piperalin is a potent inhibitor of growth and ergosterol biosynthesis in sporidia of Ustilago maydis . Piperalin at concentrations ≥0.1 μg ml −1 caused the accumulation of Δ 8,24(28) -ergostadienol, Δ 8,22,24(28) -ergostatrienol, Δ 8,22 -ergostadienol, and Δ 8 -ergostenol at the expense of ergosterol, indicative of inhibition of the Δ 8 → Δ 7 -sterol isomerase and the Δ 24(28) -sterol reductase. At 100 μg ml −1 , squalene and 2,3-oxidosqualene accumulated, demonstrating that piperalin can also affect earlier points in the pathway. In contrast, the chemically related fungicide, fenpropidin, at concentrations ≥0.01 μg ml −1 , did not result in the accumulation of Δ 8 -sterols, but rather caused the accumulation of Δ 8,14 -ergostadienol and Δ 5,8,14,24(28) -ergostatetraenol at the expense of ergosterol, indicative of inhibition of the Δ 14 -sterol reductase and the Δ 24(28) -sterol reductase. At 10–100 μg ml −1 , squalene, 2,3-oxidosqualene, and lanosterol accumulated, demonstrating action at early steps in the pathway, including transmethylation." @default.
