- W2070215533 abstract "It has been suggested that the gas exchange ventilatory threshold (VT) is an ideal training intensity for patients with cardiac disease. However, direct measurement of oxygen uptake and detection of VT is technically complicated, costly, and time-consuming. The purpose of this study was to develop a model to predict VT heart rate (VTHR) that does not depend on the collection and analysis of expired air. Subjects were 237 consecutive patients (204 men and 33 women; age range, 28 to 82 years) with coronary artery disease referred to our Phase II cardiac rehabilitation program. Each patient underwent a maximal graded exercise test using the Bruce protocol with breath-by-breath collection of expired air for oxygen uptake and VT determination. Best subsets and stepwise linear regression techniques were used to isolate variables easily obtainable from a treadmill exercise test that best explain VTHR. The resulting regression equation (x2 = 0.958) was then simplified to a weighted average formula and compared with four standard heart rate formulae using data from the original sample and an additional sample of 43 patients. The standard formulae had significantly greater variability in regard to metabolic stress between individuals than the new formula. The authors concluded that our new formula is an accurate method for determining training intensity in patients with cardiac disease without the necessity of collecting expired air and the variability incurred in using heart rate formulae." @default.
