• W2070575147 abstract "Abstract This review is divided broadly into three parts. First, a historical survey covering ideas about the origin of comets from the time of the ancient Greeks up to about 1940. During this period the idea that comets are relatively unimportant constituents of the Universe became firmly established. Next, there is a discussion of the major issues which dominated the cometary debate during the middle part of this century, culminating in Oort's proposal in 1950 that the Solar System is surrounded by a primordial cloud of comets moving in orbits extending nearly half-way to the nearest stars. Lastly, we review recent ideas about the origin of comets; particularly those which have arisen during the last decade, in which it has been realized that the outer parts of the Oort Cloud are probably not stable in the presence of passing interstellar clouds. This discovery has renewed interest in comet showers and their possible role in terrestrial evolution, and suggests the further possibility that comets might have been recently captured from the galactic environment. In this way the ‘Solar System vs . Interstellar’ debate about cometary origin has once again come to the fore. Comets are usually believed to be the most primitive cosmic bodies known, and their study is important in providing first-hand knowledge of either the primordial Solar Nebula, or other star-forming regions in the Galaxy. Whether comets are solar system or interstellar in origin, the burgeoning new research into comets, appropriately marked by the latest return of Halley's Comet, will undoubtedly lead to significant new understanding of both comet formation and star formation generally.
