- W2070661630 abstract "The data obtained from a study of 202 children fourteen years of age and younger admitted to Duke Hospital with a diagnosis of acute appendicitis, are presented. A review of the cases emphasizes the variety of the diagnostic problems presented by the child with abdominal pain. No child in this series died who was seen by the surgeon within twenty-four hours of the onset of the attack, and we believe that any child who has persistent abdominal pain for six hours should be considered as having an acute intra-abdominal condition. With Lord Moynihan we deplore the “philocathartic propensities” of parents and note also that opiates in children, as well as in adults, should not be given to relieve abdominal pain until after the diagnosis of the intra-abdominal condition has been made by the physician who is to carry the treatment to its conclusion. Emergency operations should not be done on children who have a widespread peritonitis until dehydration and acidosis have been corrected. The timely opinion of an able pediatric or medical consultant may help clarify a difficult diagnosis and avoid an unnecessary operation." @default.
