- W2070693852 abstract "Abstract Because the Mongolian gerbil ( Meriones unguiculatus ) absorbs β-carotene (βC) intact, it may be a good model for studying the metabolism of dietary carotenoids. Moreover, its ability to concentrate minerals suggests it may be useful for studying mineral metabolism. The nutritional requirements of gerbils are not well established, so we: 1) investigated the suitability of the AIN-93G diet; 2) obtained information on utilization of supplemental dietary βC; and 3) determined mineral concentrations in bone, liver and kidneys. Weanling, male gerbils (n=33) were fed either: 1) a pelleted rodent diet, 2) the AIN-93G diet, or 3) a modified AIN-93G diet which contained vitamin-free casein but no added vitamin A for 1 mo and then the same diet with added βC (10 g/kg diet). Growth rates were not affected by treatment. Hepatic concentrations of βC were very high in animals fed supplemental βC, but no signs of toxicity were apparent. Gerbils fed the pelleted diet had higher manganese concentrations in liver and kidneys and lower bone zinc concentration than did gerbils fed the other diets. The study showed that male gerbils: 1) grew normally when fed the AIN-93G rodent diet; 2) readily absorbed supplemental βC; and 3) generally had tissue mineral concentrations similar to those of rats." @default.
