- W2070890664 abstract "An extensive study of the Wealden series from the Cantabric Chain and the Sierra de los Cameros (northern Spain) reveals that the N.R.M. contains four types of components tentatively classified in decreasing ages. The older components (group 1) are considered as the primary magnetization. They yield a paleomagnetic pole located at lat. 41 °N, long. 237°E (n = 6, k = 186°, α95 = 5 °). This pole position implies the existence of a large upper Jurassic-lower Cretaceous swing in the Iberian polar-wander path. The comparison with other polar paths (North America, Africa) supports the hypothesis of an initial lower Cretaceous rotation of Iberia prior to the main mid-Cretaceous shift. The remainder of the components represent remagnetizations. The major phase (groups 2 and 3) extended from the upper Cretaceous to the Eocene at least, a period closely correlated with the period of convergence between the European and Iberian plates. The directions of group 3 are characterized by low inclination. This is a common behaviour for Eocene directions in the Mediterranean area. Previous data obtained from the Wealden redbeds largely agrees with the directions of one or other of the groups 2 and 3. As there is strong evidence of an acquisition subsequent to the main mid-Cretaceous movement of Iberia, the geodynamical inferences of the paleomagnetic data have to be re-examined. The last type of components (group 4) was built up during recent remagnetization and is of little interest." @default.
