- W2071036598 abstract "Applying laser-speckle techniques in the material sciencesas well as in methods to characterize surface conditionsof specimen has become the method of choiceespecially if a non-contacting principle is sought. Thisis almost always the case for specimen that are small inat least one dimension as for example in the materialtesting of foils, fibres or micromaterials and certainlyalso if elevated test-temperatures are preventing standardgauges. In this paper some widely overlooked sources of errorsthat - if unavoidable - increase measurement uncertaintybeyond the theoretical limit attainable are discussedand the magnitude of their influence is detailed. In particular the following effects are considered: Thelaser-source wavelength stability as well as its pointingstability, the effects caused by so-called schlierenoccuring along the optical path as well as temperatureeffects causing changes in the systems geometry, thermallyinfluencing the optical parameters of the imagingoptics as well as the often overlooked and in most illuminationsystems unknown radius of curvature of thelaser wavefronts used to illuminate the specimen.Small though as these influences seem, they mightcontribute significant uncertainties especially in materialtesting applications where the strain e = ul/l is tobe determined out of consecutive measurements of usuallysmall changes in overall length l of the specimensgeometry parameter. Typical values of e are boundedby ±2000 ppm (the typical range of Hooke's law forsteel). So values of ul on the order of tenth of micrometersfor typical gauge lenghts around 50 mm yieldppm resolutions for e. Analyzing the above mentionederror sources one can quickly see that all of them, ifnot taken care of appropriately, carry the potential tocause significantly larger deviations than the resolutionsought after demands." @default.
