- W2071325575 abstract "The ancient myth of the phoenix tells the story of a fabulous bird that lives for five hundred years, at the end of which it burns to death in an all-consuming fire from the ashes of which a new bird is born. The phoenix was a symbol of total annihilation and total renewal with which DH Lawrence strongly identified. Quintessentially romantic and anti-modern both in its mystical embrace of destruction and purification, and in its promise of an ultimate rebirth forged out of the ashes of conflict, the myth acquired a particular resonance in the years following the First World War. In the awful abyss opened up by the traumatic devastation of the Great War, out of its ashes and its acrid betrayals, many writers were sucked into the vortex of an anti-modern strain of romanticism. WB Yeats sought to establish a fascist movement in Ireland; Ezra Pound openly supported Mussolini. One might also mention Spengler, Junger, Heidegger, or Schmitt (his protestations to the contrary notwithstanding). DH Lawrence is generally counted among them. As a romantic child of the Apocalypse and a student of the Firebird, Lawrence at times craved destruction and purification. As Leo Strauss put it, the crisis of modernity was marked by 'the nihilism of the young and the positivism of the old'. The story of the firebird expressed, for Lawrence, the desire for nihilism and the promise of transcendence." @default.
